I recommend to walk across the Danube river, and see the famous lions. Def go to the Castle in Buda - after 7pm, you can explore the underground labyrinth cave only with lanterns. Awesome experience. Also the view from the top, makes you not mind the stairs down. Also, the Liberty statue hill is a pleasant hike and lets you see the Castle from a higher distance. Beautiful.

Budapest: walk on the Andrassy street, 'cause you can find everywhere beautiful stuff, and the end of the road there is the Heros's square!
Hungary is famous of the bathes. Szécheny Bath,
but in the country: Heviz, Miskolc-Tapolca, and much more! And the new great http://www.aqua-world.hu/ (One of the biggest indoor water theme parks in Europe).
And my favoutrite city in Hungary is Pecs, It's beautiful, and tiny. And my favourite artist, Zsolnay's ceramics are all over the city where you walk. And you can visit the factory. Big experience!More infos and photos: http://www.zsolnay.hu/Eng/2index.htm

Budapest is beautiful. Of course there are the Danube boat ride at night, museums, baths, the castle, etc. I recommend the Great Market Hall for shopping...nice architecture, locals doing their regular shopping is always interesting to me, and the souvenirs and handicrafts are out of this world!! Cafe Ruszwurm is the oldest cafe in Budapest...and has a wonderful cream cake/pastry thing...we saw some people eating it and asked what it was. I recommend Eger, and if you are in Hungary for months, I would explore Budapest in depth and travel around Hungary and see as much as possible!

Excellent city, check out the squat bars on rooftop and in disused buildings. The locations can be found on flyers. Good food as well :)

Apart from Budapest, there are many wonderful towns all around Hungary, e.x. Pécs or Miscolc and lots of thermal spas (aquaparks) like Sarvar or Heviz.

Can't beat the baths in Budapest.
Also they used to (two years ago?) have cheap eateries (does someone know the name & if they still exist??) - around meal times you'll see places with no real signs & long queues out them - join the queues for cheap food (be ready to point or speak hungarian).

Budapest is a beautiful city. Was there for a week this summer. It looked so dingy at first but once you see it properly it's great. Also bring a phrase book, because not many people know English. Those who do are very nice though, and will gladly help with your pronunciation! Definitely check out statue park, though it is out of the way a bit. Cruise along the Danube is a great way to see the main sights of the city, especially nice at night. I would suggest going to see Buda Castle, Gellert Hill, one of the Spas and maybe just walk along the river!! I hope you have a great 5 months there!

budapest is worth seeing, it consists of 3 parts:buda and obuda and on the otehr side of the river- pest. try to c them all coz as far as i can remember they differ a bit. plesant thing is to check out pools and baths in Gellert hotel- not very expensive. also nice thing to do is to take a ferry or a boat for a cruise over the Danube, look at the parliament. if ull hav time u can go to Szentendre -its a village famous of its artists.enjoy:)
