Kyiv is a beautiful city! Be sure to check out Maidan Nealezhnosti (Independence Square), located at the northern end of Khreschatyk (Ukraine's most famous and well-trodden street). It was the site of Ukraine's famous Orange Revolution in 2004 and has many cool monuments. There is also an underground shopping center there, which is pretty neat. You can also walk up Khreschatyk and see Mikhailivs'ka Square, where St. Michael's Golden Domed Monastery is located. Also, take advantage of the Kyiv Funicular, which takes you from Mikhailivs'ka Square up in Shevchenkivsky (Upper Town) down to Podil (Lower Town) if you don't want to walk up and down massive hills--and trust me, you don't.
However, if you do feel up to walking down, go to St. Andrew's Cathedral (also in Upper Town) and go down Andriyivskyy Uzviz (Andriyiv Descent). It's a big souvenir street. They have cool things, but maybe a little overpriced.
Other things to check out are Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Ukrainian: Києво-Печерська лавра, Kyievo-Pechers’ka lavra), also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, and the National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War (of 1941-1945) (Ukrainian: Національний музей історії Великої Вітчизняної Війни 1941-1945 років), which is a memorial complex commemorating the German-Soviet War. It is located in the southern outskirts of the Pechersk district of Kyiv.
Kyiv has a lot to offer, so I recommend checking out sites like http://www.tryukraine.com/ that have a lot of info (plus pictures and directions). Have fun!
