Most of these people apparently havent been many places. LA is generic city. NYC is dirty ugly and generally horrible unless you have a LOT of money to sit in places that hide the fact theyre in NYC. Chicago is good if you stay away from "Chicago" and visit the little neighborhoods etc. The people are great. New Orleans is great. It is an interesting place with interesting city and very not generic. Asheville, NC is beautiful. Orlando is exciting but.. hot and overcrowded. Tampa is gorgeous and party city. Daytona is mellow and beautiful. New hampshire is great if you want to see "real america". Upstate new york is gorgeous. New Jersey is too despite the rep. San Francisco is famous in the US for its beauty if you want a megacity. If you want a vacation to blow off steam go to one of the vacation cities like Orlando, Daytona, Tampa, San Diego. If you want to see america.. stay away from the big cities (you'll save a fortune too).

Los Angeles is a must see, and if you're coming from far away San Fran is worth a visit as well. Personally I love Phoenix, AZ (lots of desert scenery). On the east coast New York is obviously a place to go.

Boston is great! Philly is awesome and while you are that close you might as well do Washington DC too! Lots of musems and site, head uptown for a decent restaurant and nightlife. Very cool to see all teh suits let their hair down after work! For a warmer more relaxing trip Florida is cool, Tampa and clearwater especially to go sailing, the keyes for diving or snorkeling. Arizona is also cool.. So much diversity in a large country as the USA

How long and when are you travelling? I liked Miami & the Keys very much (not during summer as hurricane season). East Coast: New York City (all year :), Boston & surrounding (esp. for Indian Summer), Philadelphia is always underestimated and is perfect if you rent a car and drive down to Washington D.C. West Coast: Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas. And don't forget, they have some great National Parks in the US. It's always fun to combine cities with parks. Always refreshing.

Depends on what you want, of course- for a big city adventure you can't beat New York. While you're there you could take a train or drive upstate to Niagara Falls, but go in the summertime. If you're looking for sun, you can't beat Los Angeles at any time of the year, and there's endless things to do and see there. Laughlin, NV is another favorite of mine.

I would recommend Montclair, NJ! It's a small city with an exeptional café-life. I found it very inspiring that most of the food that is being sold in the city is organic:)

Well, fewer than I thought -- I expected with 9 answers to see 9 (or more) different cities. The real answer will depend on what you want to see. New York has a great theatre district (probably want to buy your tix in advance, tho); Boston is full of major historical sites from the birth of our nation; Washington D.C. has the unparalleled Smithsonian museums and probably more monuments than any other city I know. And that's just the eastern seaboard; it would take you a lifetime to see every American city worth seeing.

I like Seattle, WA and Portland, OR (just a few hours from each other by car, train or bus, or a short flight). From Seattle you can also go up to Victoria, BC and Vancouver, BC (both in Canada and accessable by the above or ferry to Victoria).
