Go to the nearest Beer Garden and drink. You will eventually have a ton of friends!

If I'm worried about feeling out of place, I start referring to wherever I'm staying as "home" - whether it's a short-term apartment or a few nights in a hostel. Then I feel more part of what's around me and more confident to - like everyone else says - get out there and meet my "neighbors."

I agree with other posters that you should try and meet some of the local people. Making a few friends will help you feel more connected to where you are. I've also found that writing about my travels to friends and family back home has helped me feel like they were included in my experiences.

I called my Mom every day for the first half of my trip to europe, then after awhile I just remembered that it's a vacation I needed to take my mind off the things at home and really enjoy my time spent there. Most people always enjoy change or something new, so if you introduce yourself to new people i'm sure they'd be just as happy to meet you as well.

I'd always think of sitting in my cubicle at work back at home, and instantly I'd remember why I was far away! :) Worked every time.

Write a letter to yourself about all the amazing things you've seen and done and why you started this journey and what you want out of it - takes you a step back so you can enjoy the view!

I try to find something that reminds me of home. Even a 7/11 or a circle K makes a big difference. Have a coke even helps. If you are in a city with a Pizza Hut or McD I will of course eat there. As it is not always available in my travels it is nice to have from time to time.

I go to the nicest hotel in town for a coffee like the Four Seasons in Cairo for example. It was expensive - about $6 for a coffee but served with such graciousness even if I came in all sweaty from walking the streets. The employees speak English and were so kind that I felt like a treasured individual. I even got a couple of cold bottles of water for free when I said I didn't want to wait for room service. I wasn't of course, staying there. I usually am staying in budget hotels but I find wherever I go, from Istanbul to Athens to Phnom Penh that just that little oasis once in a trip can perk me up enormously.

Honestly, I guess it depends on exactly what your goals are when you're visiting a nation. Numerous times when I was overseas I felt enormous home-sickness and loneliness. I discovered shortly after my first deployment that exercise is a great way to relieve those feelings. I would take long runs out in the middle of nowhere. You'd be surprised how many times I was able to stop at some local cafe, meet the locals and end up being invited for a drink or to dinner. Great friendships were built that way over my journeys while in the Marine Corps and I still keep in contact with most of them.

if you have a lot of time to spare you can get a job for about a month or so. you get to see the same people everyday and develop friendships. also you get to know the foreign faces and they become not so foreign anymore.

I find comfort in the strangest things when I am traveling such as finding peanut butter in an import store. Something that reminds me of home, even something as silly as peanut butter, has really helped me. However, I agree with most of the other posters....Get to know the country, people, and culture of wherever you are. Eventually, the enviroment won't seem so strange or foreign. This is why we travel after all-- to get outside of what we know.

I start a conversation. Pretty soon those foreign faces are friends and the strange head cases are telling stories that will be remembered forever. "Home is were the heart is". Good journeys!

Keep safe and if the head cases are too weird move on! Foreign faces exist at home and away so don't let that worry you.
