for me it was Assisi, an old walled city of beautiful cobblestone and stone buildings on a hill overlooking the countryside. epically beautiful in the morning and evening light. and a mellow vibe that will be a relief after Rome, Florence, and the other major cities. Assisi is also home to a large number of temples and churches.

absolutely Milan, very nice town, maybe not amazing like rome, florence or venice, but milan is the better place to live in italy because of its organization! then milan is the city with more trees in europe and is the better place to go shopping!!

it depends on what you want to do. i don't like big cities, i like to go to small towns and cities and really get to know them. vernazza in the cinque terre is amazing. the cliffs jutting out into the sea are beautiful. you can hike from town to town, and thes little towns are like movie sets. it's like stepping back in time.

Rome - no question.
Will keep you occupied for weeks. And once you've gone, something else gets discovered at one of the digs. And you'll wanna come back. For sure.

The Venice area... don't miss going to the islands of Murano and Burano if you're there. Verona is great and it's a short trip on the train if you use Venice as your home base.

Florence has the beauty to match any city in Italy. There are tons of things to see (as expected). The clincher is the friendliness of the locals. Give yourself at least 3 days to see it, but it sounds like a sin saying that.
But hey, I dare you to find a city in Italy you don't adore.
