Hymmm... Hard to choose the coolest - each one different ;) My types (I like them all equally): Pondicherry (colonial part of the city with promenade), Mahabalipuram (heritage places & fishing village part), Mysore (palace), Hampi (heritage places), Allappey (backwaters), Bijapur (Golgumbaz with 2nd biggest dome after the one in Vatican), Wayanad district (tea, coffee & spices plantations, amazing views), Fort Cochin (Chinese fishing nets, old bazaar, Jewish part of the city). I haven't been to Munnar, but I've heard it's really beatiful :)

Pondicherry is a fad for non Indian visitors, but you can find good supermarkets. Trips on the inland waters of Kerala is the standard tourist excursion. Try to do the unusual for foreigners - skip the (useless) Lonely Planet Guide and visit small temples and villages. Don't talk too loud (varning specificaly to travellers from the US), and don't pretend to be one of the flock. Be as you are, an interested visitor, and you will get VIP treatment. For a special experience I suggest thee Point Calimere (Kodaikarai) Sanktuary, not a national park, but more importantly a Ramsar site (!). A lovely place..

I lived in Kerala for almost a year, so I've seen almost everything there. Particularly enjoyed the backwaters boat tour, excellent beaches at Kovalam, and very nice trip to the interior to Thekkady and Periyar Tiger Preserve. Didn't see any tigers, but many elephants, antelope, deer and etc. in the wild.

In the area for me Hampi was definitely the best, with huge stones every were, and a lost city in the mountain rediscovered later on....Ok it's quiet touristic, but it's just magical! Otherwise for the mountain area Ooty is great, and stop to mysore by the way...Chennai(Madras) is not to recommend unless you live there for while...you need time to appreciate it...and it's so big!

Ooty for the serenity and Hyderabad for the culture!
Ofcourse, if you can off-track then the Eastern Ghats are worth a visit (not advisable for the novice travel).

just take a traditional boat for a two days trip in kerala. the most exciting and romantic experience in the south. U ll have a cooker, a guide and the driver. Price is quit hi for indian standards but worth it. if u wanna go to the beach the best is arambole in goa, or something less crowded for december/january is in varkala (kerala) or in some nice resorts there. Hydearabad is a 6 mio pp city... very interesting cause of 50/50 muslim/hindus... u ll see the both architectures and the interesting muslim market. I ve been living there for 4 month, just ask me if u need any help. Bangalore is a modern indian city, i personally did not love it, u won't see the roots of india. Pondicherry is a french colonia city, nice but not wonderful. Chennai is an industrial city (did not like it), go to munnar if u are interested in tea, there's also the entre to the wildlife park there. for the rest look the others suggestions...

All of it!!!! Though for tranquility, I would head for either Kerala's back waters or if you prefer a city, it would Kanyakumari. Don't miss the vivekanda rock.

Pondicherry is interesting mix of European and Indian cultures. Beautiful architecture and long coastline.
