Quito is an awesome city. Quechuan highlanders are to be seen all over the city, in their traditional colorful ponchos and fedora hats. Be sure to see the archaeological museum, too. If you stay at a hostel, they may offer excursions to various attractions in the Andes, Amazon, and coast. There are many of them: from Mindo (for birdwatchers) to Canoa (for beachgoers). I have to say, though, many of these attractions are quite touristy; this can be good, as for example the Mariscal has a very international atmosphere, but it has its downside if you were hoping for authenticity.
