Expect the same you would in any big city, for the most part. Philadelphia's are nice for the most part, but I have observed that they are not as friendly or helpful as say, New Yorkers. Tourists are always welcome and treated well, not like outcasts as in some areas.
Philadelphia is a great place to visit as long as you have a plan. There are a few tourist traps right downtown in the historic area (Ride the Ducks comes to mind), but other than that it is wonderful. Benjamin Franklin's House, Bettsy Roses's house, and Independence Hall are all must sees in that area, as well as the Liberty Bell of course.
If history isn't you think, the Avenue of the Arts offers some wonderful music and performances, as well as fine dining. Also, don't forget the museums! The Philadelphia Museum of Art is one of the finest in the world, but the other museums in the area include The Academy of Natural Sciences, The Franklin Institute, and the Rodin Museum.
Then there is shopping and eating at the Reading Terminal, Antique row, The tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Eastern State Penitentiary, Laurel Hill Cemetery, Penn’s Landing, and Batram's Gardens, just to name a few!
Have Fun!

I love Philly, its pretty easy to navigate. The zoo is great, 1st in USA, the museum and the road to the museum with all the flags is cool, the love fountain and other statues/monuments, the liberty bell, horse and carts. Try get down to the jersey shore and atlantic city as well.

Philly is tons of fun. I live close enough that it is a day trip and I love to take the train in. Public Transportation is great. The full day SEPTA (public transportation) pass that is unlimited is $11 and works all over. It is really easy to use. I love to go to the museums (I work at a museum at home) and I really want to get to the Mutter Museum sometime. Down near Penns Landing or South Street there are tons of great places to roam around and eat and drink. I love the Franklin Fountain down near Penn's Landing for some awesome old fashioned ice cream!

Philadelphia is designed to welcome the tourist... with complete day public transportation passes that can literally take you anywhere in the city within 2 stops; grab a fill of historical with Mint, City Hall free tours to top of William Penn statue, all museums - Avenue of the Arts for theatre and art museum that's free on Sundays. Saturdays there's also a tour bus to explore 100s of city murals firsthand.
Then South Street and Downtown nightlife for any budget. My favorite at night is Penns Landing, it's lit, with decorative lights and bridge make a great walk to sober up b4 heading home. :-)

Philly is very diverse. It has a great historical area especially the area around the Liberty Bell. There also great restaurants. Expect traffic.

1. It's a big city. Expect big city stuff.
2. It's ethnically diverse, don't expect to be surrounded by white people all the time.
3. There's tons of historical stuff.
4. Places to see include Independence National Historical Park on the east side of center city; Penn's Landing along the Delaware River, South Street... you can easily walk those in a loop from center city. Also there's the Zoo - one of the oldest in the US, I think? and Fairmount Park. If you venture a little outside the city there is also Valley Forge national park, with revolutionary-war history.
