Internal flights are pretty cheap, taxi's are pretty expensive...busses are ok, would prefer taking the train in India to bus or taxi though..cheap, reliable and provides a great India experience. Most trains are on time, don't know why that person told you that. They have a great train service.

Traveling by bus is also inexpensive. There are first class bus services that has AC and also clean. It is sometimes faster than train.

Hire a car service with a driver if planning to visit a region. We have done that. Quite cheap and you avoid to get lost in the crazy traffic.

Train is good for long distances - I spent 2 and a half days on a train down to Trivadrum; cheap, lots of scenery, food not too bad either. Also travelled around on the luxury buses - not luxury by uk standards but safer and have air con

I rented a car twice, first in 2007 to visit the south starting from Mumbai for a total of more than 6000km in 3 weeks and half. Then I rented a car on 2. january 2010 until 25 january and I drove 6000km in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Haryana and Delhi. If you are an experienced driver with good nerves and sense for orientation it's the better choice. In this way you are 100% independent and you can go everywhere. Cost about 35000RS/month.

Traveling on the Train in India is the best way to see India, and experience the everyday life of the culture. I love the train and the overnight 2nd AC is great airconditioned with meals..4 people to a birth..reasonable costs..

Fastest is by air, cheapest is by railway or bus depending on the distance and class of travel. India being a huge country sometimes it is better to travel long distances by air even if it is expensive since it saves a lot of travel time if you are on a short trip. Rail journeys are something you have to do anyway so make it a point to make even a short journey just for the experience.

Travelling by train is for me the best way, however I tried also bus and local flights ....I didn t have any bad experience at all, I felt secure during the entire trip ...Depend also how long you spend in India, if you have short time there ...then I would recommend you to use flight ..

I'd suggest Railways for Medium distance travel (choose your train wisely- Rajdhani exp, Shatabdi exp, Sampark Kranti etc are good trains) Roadways (Volvo buses/ Cabs) for short distance travel. and Domestic Airways for long distance/fast travel (if you are budget conscious then you've cheap airlines like GoAir, IndiGo, SpiceJet etc.)

I agree, internal flights are cheap enough, very fast, very easy and really save you time and the hassle of the train reservation systems...what a nightmare eh! Sometimes the volvo AC buses are good too.

Trains are quite good, but depending on where you want to go, car rental with driver or internal flights can be a good and cheap way to move around.

India is pretty cheap :) ... just arrange an Indian friend to travel with you it will be cheaper. Few people take advantage of foreigners in many different places. Train is the cheapest option here .. even the flight is not that costly. as its a big country plan accordingly ..obviously its not possible to cover all. Pick places according which will be the best for you.

Bus. For train tickets you have to plan ahead or you end up sleeping on the floor in second class. While that does have its moments, its generally not the best way to travel. For the bus, you can just show up at the bus station and get on a bus. I preferred the smoky, beat up state buses to the private AC things. They were almost always cheaper and the touts don't come on the state and bother you.

Learned from experience - obviously the flights are most time efficient, when it comes to long distances. Be ready for at least 10 inspections of your ticket, id, and hand luggage before (and sometimes even after) the flight - that's the only inconvenience though. Besides that, if I were to travel in India, I wouldn't pick anything else than a train. NEVER EVER to buses again! NEVER! It usually cots twice the price of a train ticket, takes longer than a train, and is not unlikely to break in the middle of the way, at 3am, in the middle of a mountainous jungle (that's what happened to me). The only bad thing about the trains is the sick reservation system, that has nothing to do with some kind of order. If you can make a plan that you WILL stick to, you should buy the train tickets asap when you arrive in India, for the whole trip. Of course, making stable plans in India is rather impossible, but maybe you can get lucky with it. The answer is simple: there is nothing but the train.

actually as a matter of fact trains r the best way to travel in India. though they r nowhwere near the europe rail service standards they r the best way to get into the skin of Indian tradition. dont be surprised to make few friends:D buses r also good way but not everywhere. known places offer better volvo services than the interiors. as for driving around the distances can be too far plus depends on when u travelling. summers r quite killing to be on the road. lastly air travel is a good option. lots of low cost airlines have cropped up & offer good service :D

Is it still a mess to do a reservation for the train??? how is it working now? i remembered fighting with indians to get my own tickets... I ve been taking the train most of the time in India. the only annoying thing is the huge time spent on it as it seems a neverending travel. got twice a proble, came 11 hours (!!!) late once. Another day i was lucky not having taken one (just had an accident and the train went down in a river....). For sure it's an amazing experience, with all those indians inside if u take the second class without conditioning.... i loved that. THANKS to everybody!!!!

Try to get a local driver with his own car and learn how to huggle.Usual price for 24 hr service is 200 rupees.Dont try to drive yourself unless you are absolutely sure about your driving skills.lol Believe my there is nothing better. You will avoid breathing in polluted air, beggers hands all over you,and you will get free interpretour just in case.Experienced driver can be fast as well, roads in India are ok so you can easyly to 100km per hour ,same as a train.Good luck.Kasia
