From St. Mark's Square take the Vaporetto to the Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore. It is a small island with a large church on it. You can pay to go up to the top of the bell tower by elevator, and from there you will get the most amazing view of Venice, down the grand canal and across to the Lido. Well worth it!

If you are interested in contemporary art, visit Venice Biennale that takes part every second year in Venice (also this year, 2009). You can see the most interesting modern art from all the world concentrated in one city. www.labiennale.org

first time i visited venice i only went to piazza san marco, ponte di rialto and few other classics. it was so crowded and filled with tourists that one couldn't really enjoy it. the second time i went also on the cruises to the nearby islands which weren't quite that crowded at the time and i reckon you could also see some more of the traditions and real locals than just other tourists. if you have a car i can also recommend a quite close city of caorle. a beatiful place and a whole lot more original.

Just start at St. Markus square and indulge in a simple walk through all small streets. that is the best way to experience the city.

Just walk along the streets... if you like art go to Galleria de Accademia (Bellini, Tiziano, Giorgione, Tintoretto, Veronese... ) and visit Santa Maria dei Frarii (there are surprises inside!).. don't forget Palaccio Ducale, it was the center of the powerfull Venecian Republic and you can see the sinister prisons inside, too.

Venice is a photographer's dream. Anywhere. I know folks hate the Square but you have to go through to say you did. See St. Mark's. I also liked several of the other churches which were off the beaten path and so beautiful. Go up to the top of the Campanile so you get great views of the area. St. Georgio's was beautiful.

Venice is just an all around marvelous place to visit. If you like beaches there's some good ones on the outer islands surrounding Venice (need to take a motorboat taxi). Gondola rides are pretty sweet too.

It really dipends on what you are looking for...from my personal point of view the best part is to visit the narrow road (calli) trying to get lost at the sun set. If you are a romantic one....Ponte dei Sospiri If you are a classic one.....San Marco Square If you are a "breath taker" one...walk up the staiers in the San Marco bell tower
