I went there on a work trip. The food was good (specially fish), people were in general great and Santo Domingo city is very pretty. However, moving around on your own over there will get dozens of people constantly asking you to be your guides, buy things, drive you here or there ... Quite tiresome after a while. I also went scuba diving and both dives were nice -nothing extraordinary, specially for Caribbean standards, though- The beach (at Sta Catalina) though, was superb. If you are going to a resort, it can be a nice place to relax. If you are planning to move around, though, I'd choose another place. Dominica, for example, is really great

Gran Bahia Principe in La Romana. Beautiful, well kept resort, but the food left something to be desired. Still, a good experience if you're interested in a stress-free, relaxing vacation.

I stayed in Sousa in the Dominican Republic, which was great! spent a day at Isla Saona snorkeling around the island drinking rum from a coconut and taking a catamaran back to the main land. Great experience! So was the grade 3 white water rafting.

I have been to Santo Domingo many times and just love the city and the people. The old city is amazing and a must see in the day time. It is all lit up in the evening and looks impressive. The caves in Santo Domingo are the same ones the Tarzan movies were all shot in. The Christopher Columbus Monument is impressive as are many things in this small country. I have been there for their Merengue Festival and again it was super. Be sure to visit Mercardo Modello to see all the fantastic items for sale. This is a old big building in town that is broken up inside into small shops and they sell everything in there from furniture to jewelry.. I end up spending a whole day there. It is barter... and the people are so nice. Also check out the clothing stores on the mall streets in town.

i've been to the dominican 6 times, and loved it everytime. i agree with Sanna, they have the BEST music in the world! even if ur not a dancer, the beat gets u movin'! there is tons of things to see and do, u just have to leave ur fancy resort and go find them. theres a cable car ride in Puerto Plata that offers views of the whole city and coast. also in Pto Plata are the Amber Museum and Fuerte San Felipe (a fortess overlooking the bay). Sosua & Cabarete are great for shopping. Cabarete is known for its kitesurfing! from Cabarete u can rent a taxi for the day and get the drivers to take u to less touristy places such as the Blue Lagoon, Playa Caleta, the lookout point near Abreu, Cabo Frances, Playa Preciosa (my personal favorite), and of course the huge Playa Grande (great place to stop for lunch - fantastic chicken). Samana is a very beautiful area of the island (its a peninnsula). It is mountainous and the water is bluer than in the Pto Plate region. u can take a boat to Cayo Levantado (last time i was there they were building a resort on the island, so it may be alot touristy now), Las Galeras & Las Terranas are also beautiful areas in Samana. Santo Domingo (the capital located on the Caribbean side) has alot of history (u can see where Christopher Columbus is buried, and also where the Colubus family lived). The Caribbean side of the island has bluer water and whiter sand, but hteres not as much to do. the northern part of the island is mountainsous so there alot of waterfalls and hiking to be done. Isla Saona (near La Romana) is beautiful, but getting touristy. Punta cana has perfect beaches, but theres not alot to do besides the usual snorkeling and shopping.

The Dominican Republic is fantastic. Its better than Mexico and Cuba in my opinion. The beaches are nicer and there is more to do. The people are also FANTASTIC. But watch out...the resorts like to make drinks with overproof rum so it can hit your head quite quickly! Ok dive spots too.

If you really want to travel around you should speak a little bit of spanish - in santo domingo they speak english, outside not often. But it's no problem to travel on your own as a woman (at least i didn't have any). Just be careful, but that's the same in europe or any other country you'd go to. If you want more informations contact me

I've lived there two years and worked for a travel agency. I can say that I know "this and that" about the country. Actually when I left, one of my friends told me that I know too much;) DR has great beaches (Playa Grande, Las Terrenas, Isla Saona=paradise and many more) Great snorkling in Punta Rusia, diving not as good. Cabarete is for kite surfing and partying, Santiago and Santo Domingo are he best places for shopping. I need to disagree with Juan: I dont find the cultural attractions that interesting or well kept that I would go there for the museos ;) Music is the best kind in the whole world!! Reggeton, merengue, bachata and salsa is playing everywhere and the dominicans are really friendly, beautiful and happy people!! I would recommend you to visit there in the beginning of the year - less rain...

The Dominican Republic is a beautiful country in the Caribbean. Santo Domingo, the capital city, has great museums, and sometimes has great concerts and other nocturnal activities. The Dominican Republic has beautiful beaches, it is home to the tallest mountain in the Caribbean, the largest saltwater lake in the caribbean, and it was the first European settlement in the "new world".

I have been to Dominican a couple of times, once on a cruise and once for a week. Was not happy either time. I much prefer Cuba. In general the Dominicans seem to have a very demanding attitude whereas the Cubans do not! Have been to Cuba 54 times and still continue to go. Love it. You should try it.
