I've found that most people in Europe know English. I think that the British and Americans (I'm an American) expect other people to speak English and it is sad that they (and me) don't adapt to other cultures and other ways of life. I've actually had some Parisians insult me in perfect English for being an American. I was offended, but at the same time, they had a point because I wouldn't have been able to respond in their language. So I guess what I am trying to say is that yes, it is possible, but try to learn their way of life and their language as well because it is polite and it will further your knowledge!

Krakow, especially in the Kazimierz district where all the new pubs/bars are popping up, a lot of folks from UK go to holiday, as wel as folks from US. My husband, who doesn't speek Polish, other than "Prosze daj mi piwo" or "Please give me a beer," though on occasion it can sound like he is saying "Pig, give me a beer" (subtle pronounciation error that he once said to my uncle--we all had a laugh), got along fine in the pubs. My parents, uncle and I all retreated for the night but my husband stayed out in Kazimierz and ended up having a conversation on Polish politics in English with a couple of "English speaking bartenders," So you could be one of those folks helping an anglo-speaker out. They even helped him find his way to the hotel...where incidently he ran into a really drunk guy from Manchester, but that is a whole other story...
Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands also...lots of English speakers. Some hostels have small pubs/bars too...those places always need English speakers.

About Spain.... if you go to the typical holiday destinations like the mediterranean coast, the Balearic islands (mallorca, ibiza, menorca) or even the canary islands you wouldn´t be lost at all. In those places I came accross bartenders who couldn´t speak spanish

I guess you could be a real asset in Warsaw or Krakow in Poland- especially in a pub/club where most foreigners hang around.
Need more info? Let me know,
Marek

The best countries for bartending in English in Europe would indeed be Belgium & Holland. Forget about Spain and Italy, only ahandful of people speak and understand English in those countries. You could even try Copenhagen - Denmark (as they speak and perfectly understand English), but my experience there is that they're not very "open" towards "foreigners"...

There are Irish Pubs throughout Europe and they always speak English. Of course it would be preferable to speak a bit of the native language.

I think Spain is a good place for that. I live here, and I've been in many places where the staff wouldn't speak Spanish at all. Personnally I hate it, but if you're not willing to learn try Tenerife or the Costa Blanca.
