It is cheaper to stay in Bratislava and do daily train visits to Vienna. Some people even live this way: work in Vienna, have a home in Bratislava.

You can easily go to Bratislava using the "Bratislover" ticket from ÖBB. I payed 14 euros and it allows you to used public transportation both in Vienna and Bratislava. Trains leave each +-40mins from Sudbahnhof to Bratislava hl.n. and it takes about 50 minutes to get to the Slovakian capital. Pay atention to the time table!

I agree staying in Bratislava is the cheaper option - Vienna is only an hour away. But if you are after a different option for travel between Vienna and Bratislava, try the boat down the danube. Twin City Liner is the company & you can buy tickets online. In Vienna they leave from Swedenplatz take an hour 15 and cost 20Euros They drop you off right at the bottom of the old town in Bratislava

Definitely Wombats if you're going to stay in Vienna itself - the Lounge is more modern and shiney, but the Base has a great atmosphere and bar. Otherwise, Meininger hostel is very good too. Bratislava is about an hour away by bus or train, but if you splash out on a boat trip up the Danube you get a great view of the places along the riverside on the way. If you're staying in Brat, then Patio Hostel is cheap and nice, and is right next to a huge Tescos for food

If you like to stay in Vienna try with the hotel Ibis on Mariahilfer Strasse, or with Hotel Mozart. To go go Bratislava take a train

Trains are indeed the best option. They leave at Wien Mitte 01 minutes past every hour to Bratislava Petrzalka - a suburb and 20 minutes past every hour to Bratislava Central station.
If you do not want to commute extensively, Vienna City Hostel might be a good alternative:

Agree with Roza. There are at least two trains per hour from Bratislava to Vienna which takes about 60 minutes to get there, also buses every 1,5 hour and by car its about one hour.
Its cheaper to pay for hotel or hostel in Bratislava. Good one for travelers is City Hostel in Obchodna street in the city center of Bratislava. Im using this one for my friends and they are always satisfied. the page is : www.cityhostel.sk and swich to english. The most expensive night there is 40 Euro :)
