go in the fall, the weather is cool and you may get some rain, but if you pack a light jacket and bring umbrella, some gloves and a hat if you are going up north- you can still get out and do a lot of hiking , walking and sightseeing . The crowds will be down and the prices less. We went in October and had some beautiful weather mixed in with some rainy cool days

a few more details, the edinburgh military tattoo is an a british army piper regiment. they have an annual piper concert right on the top of the hill in edinburgh castle!!! it runs for about a week or two, is televised in the UK, and sells out so early every year!! if you are going to cross the pond to go to scotland, you might as well see the tattoo!

go in the summer during the edinburgh festival!!!! its one of europe's premier festivals with the edinburgh military tattoo, a show that often sells out a year or months in advance!!!!!! awesome city, and one of the safest in the world!!! summer, obviously, is your best time to go. google up the edinburgh festival and work your schedule around it! book and organise your accomodations early cause the festival is very popular in europe. its a world festival by the way! so you'll see artists from all over the world!!!!!! and ofcourse get yourself some authentic highland wear!!! and don't forget to ask which clan your colors belong to!!! if you are on a budget, there are tent camps too a mile or two out of edinburgh with buses to the camps!! i stayed in a camp the last time i was there, and loved it!!!!! happy travels###

Best is definitely spring! I lived there for over a year and the weather you get around late april and may is most likely to be sunny and warm. Of course, autumn is great too, but it's more likely to be cool and rainy around that time. So if I had to chose a time, I'd go sometime in may. Cheers, have fun!

That's a tough question! I'd say the medieval times would be the best period to travel to Scotland, but there was a lot of termoil with the English back the...oh, wait, that's not what you meant. Late spring or early fall. The weather is always unpredictable so be prepared for nearly anything. Your best chances of good weather are in the summer, but all the other tourists know that too so everything's going to be more crowded. Luckily, Scotland's beautiful year-round and even in the cold months the collective hospitality will warm your bones :) Enjoy your visit!

go at the end of summer for the festivals! it is lovely weather and excitingly busy. spring is also beautiful just when teh flowers are starting to go crazy, but weather can still be a little iffy if too early

I second the idea to go during the festival. There is so much MORE to see and do and you meet great people from all over who come to see all there is to see. Just pack in layers and plan way in advance to have a place to stay that is within your budget. Have fun!

I think summer is best because the daylight hours are extra long...sometimes staying light outside until 11pm or so.
