Been to Santorini around 10 times... My fav greek island. Will fit for every kind of mood. Quiet, romantic, wild... Which days are you going? It's veeery crowded in Fira the first 2 weeks of August. If you want the romantic sunset, stay around Fira or Imerovigli. For wild afternoon beach parties, go to Perivolos beach, Chilli beach bar. Many night clubs in Fira. But unfortunately, don't expect to find the best beaches you have seen... Perivolos and Monolithos are for example ok, but can't be compared to a zillion other beaches around Greece. But what you'll see and feel on the Kaldera, will be a unique experience/feeling... John

Make sure you visit the island with the volcano (Nea Kameni). Also don't miss a trip to Oia around sunset time. The views are magnificent.

I havent been there myself, but I studied it in an art history class, and its one of my favorite times of the semester. Ou should learn the history of the place before going, and also the legend...or more than anything that its like on the top of the list of likely places to be the lost city of Atlantis and the such. Its all amazing. They were a civilization known as the Minoans. They also had a really famous palace in Crete. Its one of the 3 oldest cultures in recorded history. Just study up and really know where you're going to be standing. I'm extremely jealouse.

I visited Santorini in August 2006 as part of a Celebrity Cruise. We purchased a ticket and rode the cable car to the top, however, you can be adventurous and hike it up the trail or rent a mule to take you. Once at the top, it's nothing but walking on most streets and the shopping is plentiful. When you get off the cable cab, there were a few shops to the right and then a little bar up high to the right (had to climb a set of stairs) that had the best gyro I have ever had in my life. I sat up there, drank a few beers, and enjoyed the gorgeous view. Also check out the black sand beaches... a little walking will get you to the taxi stand and just have them take you to the nearest public beach (bus transportation was also really easy, for a return trip). The black sand beaches were nice, and keep in mind not everybody is necessarily clothed. If you do take a taxi, they don't really follow any laws on the road like you may be used to, so prepare for an exciting (if not nerve-wracking) ride. Enjoy your time there - I can not wait to go back. (One last thing, we hiked around a bit, heading, well, basically up, and there are some views up high of the entire area that are without a doubt the most breath-taking scenes I have ever personally seen.

I'm sorry to psyche you out, I haven't been there, but that's where I want to go on my honeymoon next spring! Will you let me know when someone answers your question? Giada De Lorenta (cook from the food network) did an episode there and it looks stunningly beautiful!
