The legendary lakes of Band-e Amir, located in the Hindu Kush Mountains in central Afghanistan, are a series of six stunning lakes that vary in colour from rich blues to turquoise.  The lakes bright colours are even more pronounced against the barren brown grey landscape surrounding the lakes.

The lakes are chained in sequence from the highest to the lowest, and were formed by the flow of water through a series of natural travertine terraces.  The colour of the lakes results from the water purity and high lime content.

The five lakes of Band-e Amir are Band-e Gholaman, Band-e Qambar, Band-e Haibat, Band-e Panir, Band-e Pudina, and Band-e Zulfiqar.
