Located in the rugged valley at the junction between the Hari Rud and Jam rivers, the Minaret of Jam is a 65m minaret situated against a backdrop of 2400 metre mountains that was built between the 11th and 13th century.  The minaret is built entirely out of baked-bricks, and features two towers.  It is known for its intricate stucco and glazed tile decorations containing kufic and nashki calligraphy, geometric patterns, and verses from the Qur'an.  The minaret is built on a seven metre octagonal base, and the towers are accessed via two spiral staircases.  The area was most likely once the summer capital of the Ghurid dynasty.

The Minaret of Jam was Afghanistan's first UNESCO World Heritage site.
