The Kasbah, meaning "fortified place", is an Ottoman defensive city/structure. Located in the old city of Algiers, this Kasbah is unique in that it is one of the few built in North Africa on a hillside. It is situated in the upper parts of Algiers overlooking the rest of the city as well as the Mediterranean coast, and was designated a UNESCO world heritage site. The Kasbah, built over 250-450 years ago, contains remains of an old citadel, mosques, Ottoman style palaces, as well as a labyrinth network of houses, narrow steps, passageways and alleys seemingly built one on top of another.

The old city is in a state of disrepair and is in urgent need of restoration.

You haven't been to Algiers if you haven't seen the kasbah. This is the most authentique area of the city. It's wise to be accompanied by a police escort (available at the border of the kasbah) because you might get mugged otherwise.

They should take care of it, it is getting degradated at an increasing pace, but to have a walk up and down the Kasbah, without any concern in your mind, is great
