A mountain range in the Sahara desert located in southeast Algeria, the region is protected as the Tassili n'Ajjer National Park, and is also considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The landscape features deep chasms, and dramatic sandstone cliffs, which, over the years, have eroded to form over 300 dramatic natural rock arches, and other spectacular landforms.

Sandstone's ability to hold water means that the vegetation in the region is unusually rich - endemic Saharan Cypress and Saharan Myrtle trees can be found here.

The Tassili n'Ajjer National Park is also famous for its prehistoric rock paintings and archaeological sites dating back from the neolithic times over 8,000 years ago.  These paintings depict life in a region that is far more lush.

The area can only be visited with an official tour guide.
