Description:
The Ahaggar Massif, also known as Hoggar Mountain, is a highland region in the central Sahara in the southern part of Algeria.  It is one of the most popular travel region sin the country.  Ahaggar's highest point is Mount Tahat, at an elevation of 3,003 metres, and the region has an average elevation of 900 metres.  The terrain is rocky desert and volcanic in origin, though the climate is less extreme than other areas of the Sahara.  Temperatures can fall below 0oC in the winter.

The Ahaggar is also home to the Imuhagh (Kel Ahaggar).  These are a subset of the Tuareg people, a group famous for their blue garments and veiled men, as well as their practice of tracking lineage matrilineally.

Famous regions within Ahaggar include Assekrem, which is where Père de Foucauld lived, and the oasis of Abalassa, which contains the tomb of Tin Hinan, a famous matriarch believed to be the ancestor of Turareg of Ahaggar.  The region also features Cave paintings depicting wildlife now found only in the southern parts of Africa.  A popular way to view this region is through the Hoggar Circuit.

Getting there:
Because of the rough terrain, it is best to visit the area on a 4x4 vehicle and with a guide.
