About Charles de Foucauld Hermitage
Considered to be the first Catholic church to be built in the Sahara, and consecrated in 1938, the small hermitage was built by Charles de Foucauld in order to bring Christianity to this part of Africa. He was killed in 1916 and is buried in this area.
