The Drake Passage or Mar de Hoces is infamous for beign a wild, rough body of water. It is the "rite of passage" for travellers who head to Antarctica by sea. Rough seas and huge swells are common, and it can take 2-4 days to cross the passage by ship, depending on weather.

Crossing the Drake Passage was amazing. We had a "calm crossing" per our crew. We were lucky to be able to be out on deck most of the passage and see dolphins playfully jumping in the wake that our boat created. Perhaps the most magnificent day was when we spotted our first iceberg and were officially nearing the white continent.

We were lucky to have only 1 rough day across the Drake. The swells were so high nobody was allowed outside. We had to have seat belts keep our chairs in place when eating. Great times...a true initiation before visiting Antarctica.
