Situated in the historical center of the old city in the Plaza Pedro del Castillo, the Museo del Area Fundacional is one of the citiy's oldest structures.  Built in 1562, this historical museum contains an underground chamber with archaeological remains of Cabildo - the main administrative institution of the colonial government, remains of the town slaughterhouse, and the fruits and vegetable markets - all of which were destroyed during the earthquake of 1861.

Other objects found at the museum include archaeological finds, a historical recount of events including independence from Spain, the evolution of the city, sculpture collections, and more.
