Perito Moreno Glacier
About Perito Moreno Glacier
Located within the Los Glaciares National Park, the Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the most impressive glaciers in the park at 250 square kilometres. It is one of the few glaciers in Argentina that is not retreating. Its size makes it the world's third largest reserve of fresh water.
As the glacier advances, its path crosses over the L shaped Lago Argentino (Argentine Lake), separating the lake into two. This causes the water level to rise up on the blocked size, sometimes as high as 30 metres. Eventually the pressure breaks the barrier, creating a spectacular rupture. It's a pretty impressive sight to see if you are there to catch it happening --though actually timing yourself to be there for this once every four to five year event will be quite the forecasting magic. Nov 16, 2008 Fantastic! It is one of the rare glaciers in the world that is actually gaining mass. You can get very up close and personal with it from the hiking decks, a cruise on Lago Argentino or a trekking tour onto the glacier itself.
