Lake Burley Griffin is a completely manmade lake in the middle of Canberra.  It was designed by Walter Burley Griffin as part of his plan for the city and was constructed in 1963.  You will often see people walking/running/cycling around it's 35km shoreline.  However as it's a manmade lake it often doesn't clean itself very well and you will rarely see people actually swimming in it.

It's also a great place to go running and you can hire little peddle-powered boats and play around on the water itself.  Be warned though the water can be pretty revolting so you might want to avoid actually ending up in it!

A great thing to see in Spring, Floriade is a flower festival by the lake which is really worthwhile. Hire a bike and follow the bikepath which cicuits around the lake.
