Jan 27, 2010 Not far from the vineyards and wineries of Mc Laren Vale, is the tiny town of old Port Willunga, near the bottom of Gulf St, Vincent. Here on the beach you will find the ruins of the historical pier where long ago, barques would tie up to load bags of wheat and bales of wool for transport around to the east coast to be loaded onto ships bound for England. In the cliffs lining the beach, store rooms had been hewn out of the limestone & compacted sand just above the high tide mark. Here the farmers would deliver their grain and wool to be stored until the next barque arrived. These amazing carved out storerooms are still there, as are the old ruins of the jetty. If you are lucky enough to be there at sunset, you may get a lovely photo of the cliffs red in the sun, or the colours on the sea through the old jetty. Great for a swim too!!!!!
