Its an amazing hip place to be. It is where a lot of the cool and cheap backpackers are and a little like a diluted version of Kings cross in Sydney. There is the usual, sex shops, buskers and sometimes prostitutes around grey street. The famous Neighbours night is held near in In the Elephant and Wheelbarrow. There is an aging luna park, which is great to see.If you hop on a tram from here you can head to the near by Chapel street which is so cosmopolitan and chilled.

St Kilda Pier provides an unforgettable experience right in the heart of Melbourne. Visit the popular Esplanade Art and Craft market on Sundays which is one of the best markets in Melbourne. Don't forget to visit the St Kilda Pavilion which is a historic kiosk located at the end of St Kilda Pier...

If you plan to visit Melbourne you should definitely stay in St. Kilda. The Coogees is a very nice hostel and close to the tramstation and therefore it's only 20 min to Flinders Station.
Or rent a bike in St. Kilda and drive into the city along the beach. A great trip - highly recommended!
