May 28, 2011 Nicknamed "the river that flows upside down" due to it's very brown colour, it's the main river that flows through the Melbourne CBD. Fairly plain when it passes by the south part of the Melbourne CBD, the most picturesque parts of the river close to the CBD is along Alexandra Avenue, opposite the Sports and Entertainment centre, just outside the Botanical Gardens. There are bike paths alongside the river that make it a very pleasant way to see a little of Melbourne. Jan 31, 2012 On a sunny day the river can be lovely. Although when walking or cyclying you need to watch out for the rowing coaches (they are the ones wobbling down the river on a bike with a megaphone), and the crazy cyclists (the guys in the full cycling gear yelling at everyone). It can smell horrible though at low tide, especially if we haven't had good rain for a while. lovely place though!
