The Swan River is pretty much the heart of Perth. The city is divided into north and south by the river (and this is a defining characteristic of somebody from Perth- whether they are from the south or the north) and on weekends (and often weekdays in fact) it's a hive of activity. There are boats sailing on the river, people cycling around it, jogging along the foreshore or just enjoying a leisurely stroll. You'll also see power walkers, rollerbladers, people kicking footballs around and people with picnics. Oh and in some places you can hire windsurfers (over towards Nedlands) or catamarans (South Perth foreshore) so explore the river in more detail.

You can't avoid the river in Perth, it's everywhere, and it's an essential part of the identity of Perth. It's an incredibly pleasant place to go for a wander, and if you're into sports, well, you can take your pick!
