Feb 20, 2009 We loved Salzburg so much that we went again on our second trip to Europe. The fortress gives you a grand idea of how the city was protected years ago. The clock still works too. Loved the pretzel bread and food at the local restaurants. The fountain in the middle of the square is a great photo opp. The gardens are amazing in the spring. Oct 28, 2009 The Fortress was amazing. It was about 10 Euros to go in, but the view from up top was worth the cost. It has an interesting collection of historical artifacts as well as a curious museum of marionettes. There is a lift up to the fortress if you want to spend extra for that. I personally didn't mind saving the extra 10 Euros to walk up the hill to its gates. Nov 15, 2009 The 900-year-old Hohensalzburg Fortress, the city's chief landmark, is the biggest and most fully-preserved fortification in Europe. Built by Archbishop Gebhard during the investiture controversy in 1077, it served to protect the clergy and the population.
