Mar 8, 2009 The abbaye de 'Villers-la-Ville' is somewhat the Belgian Pompei and one of the most visited place in Belgium. In its woody valley, the old ruins covered with ivy give off an atmosphere of romantism. Victor Hugo visited the place and started the idea to write 'Les Miserables' after visting the damp cells and dungeon underground. The style is varied, from early Gothic to neo-classic (à la Dewez), with some interessing particularities. A real journey to the Middle Ages!
