The massive Grand Place is the central market square in Brussels. Victor Hugo described it as “Europe’s most beautiful square”, which is an impressive accolade given the many beautiful squares in Europe. The square itself plays host to morning flower markets during the summer.
Surrounding the Grand Place are many guildhalls (and some private houses) dating from the late 17th to the 18th century. The buildings are impressively covered in sculptures and gilding. You can take a look at guilds that include the Coopers’ Guild, the Boatmen’s Guild, and the Butchers’ Guild among others. Also on the Grand Place is the 13th-15th century Gothic town hall. This outstanding building has many detailed carvings on the outsides and beautiful tapestries on the inside.

When you're in Brussels you have to see it. This place is one of the Unesco protected sites and seeing it yourself you realise why.The city hall is one of the most impressive one you can find in Belgium. There are so many stories tied to these buildings. Try to find a good guide book or stand along side a guide explaining it all to his busloads of tourists. The bars in the square are ok but overpriced as you might have suspected. In the streets around the square there are tons of take-aways which are catering only to tourists.

La Gran Plaza, Grand Place para los belgas, es sin duda la plaza más impresionante del mundo. Para los habitantes de Bruselas se trata de la plaza más bonita del mundo, y lo cierto es que la gran mayoría de los que la visitan salen de allí con la misma impresión, y es que se trata de una impresionante plaza de dimensiones colosales (110 x 68 metros), cuyos edificios que la forman compiten entre sí en belleza, aunque entre ellos tal vez sea el Ayuntamiento de Bruselas el que más destaque.

The grand place, is probably the most significant place in Brussels and one that attracts millions of tourists each ear. The Place itself is a large rectangle with various different building, including the communal building of Brussels. Around the are you will find, the Manneken Pis, or the the little boy which pees, as well as hundreds, if not thousands of restaurants, as well as a variety of hotels ranging in varying categories.

The Grand Place is just amazing in Brussels. I think it was Victor Hugo who said he thought it was the most beautiful grand place in all of Europe. The Mannekin Pis isn't too far from the Grand-Place, and Chocopolis is where I remember buying chocolate for my family at a reasonable price. If I got back to Brussels, I'd like to visit their museum on BDs (comic books).
