One of the most heavily visited reserves in Belize, the Mountain Pine Ridge is a 300 square mile reserve that featuring rolling pine forests blanketed the hilly region that is punctuated by broadleaf gallery forests, and the unique Baldy Beacon, an infertile area covered by tough grasses.

Highlights of the region include the a 1000 feet Valley Waterfalls, the King Vulture Falls, the Rio Pools, a popular site for summer picnics featuring a river that cascades into a cavern strew with boulders, the Rio Frio Cave, and more.

Bird lovers will be able to observe species ranging from the Acorn Woodpecker to the Orange-Breasted Falcon, King Vulture and more.  On the botany side, orchids and ferns grow abundantly in the region.  A short trail system is being developed by the forestry department.

The reserve is not accessible by bus.

By car
From Georgeville, stay on the Chiquibul Road from Mile 63 onwards.

From Santa Elena, take the Cristo Rey Road that leads directly out.

Both roads are rough, and a 4-wheel drive is recommended.  The reserve entrance goes through a gate houses that leads towards D'Silva Forest Station.

The waterfalls and caves at Mountain Pine Ridge are fun to explore. The downside is that much of the reserve has been devastated in recent years by pine beetles, so the blanket of forest isn't much in many places. Still worth a visit as attractions are many, but be prepared for some ugly dead zones of trees.
