Situated in western Belize about 130km west of Belize City, the Maya Site of Xunantunich is perched on a ridge overlooking the Mopan River, very close to the Guatemala border.  The name, meaning "Stone Women," is thought to have been built during the Classic Era from about 200 to 900 AD, and was once considered a major ceremonial center.

The site features six major plazas that are surrounded by more than 26 temples and palaces.  "El Castillo" (The Caste) is the most prominent structure, rising 130 feet high above the plaza, and is the second tallest man-made structure in Belize.

Ongoing exploration and excavation efforts are in progress at the site.

Beautiful Mayan Ruins! I couldn't believe my eyes, and my ears! Get on top of El Castillo for a great 360 view of San Ignacio and the Guatemalan border. If you're at the top, anything you yell can be heard at the bottom plaza. Definitely recommended for any traveler in Belize. Make sure to get a good tour guide that can tell you details about the ruins and the history of Xunantunich, as well as nearby Tikal and the other Mayan ruins in Belize.

An amazing and accessible Mayan ruin. Not nearly as expansive as Tikal but small enough to actually explore.

Stay at the Treck Stop. It is like camping at the country fair with cold Beer, Nice expat. owners, Composting Toilets, solar heated showers, and pretty good food. You can also arrange a day trip to Tikal.

Just remember its Belize man nothing runs on time...

The feeling of climbing the Mayan temples was exhilirating! I am afraid of heights but didn't fear looking over the edge when I reached the top of the tallest temple.

Awesome - it is the most intense feeling to climb the ruins, one of the few places left in the world where you can still climb on them.
