Build in 1637, the Punakha Dzong is Bhutan's second oldest and is one of the more important.  The Punakha Dzong serves as both a fortress and an administrative centre, holding the seat of Bhutan's head abbot.  The Dzong was significantly expanded between 1744-1763 into its current labyrinthine structure.  Throughout time, the dzong has suffered damage from various fires as well as the 1897 earthquake, but restoration work using traditional materials keeps the architectural style and feel intact.
