This colonial-style chruch was initially completed in 1754, and is considered to themost popular Catholic church in Salvador. It is the site of many annual evens such as the Feast of Bonfim and the stair-washing ritual of afro-brazilian culture. Legend has it that the Senhor de Bonfim was saint capable of curing diseases and ailments, and his sculpture housed in the famous Sala dos Milagres (Room of the Miracles) attracts pilgrims from all around Brazil. The religious often leave personal belongings in case their wishes come true, including photos, letters, diplomas and everything else imaginable.

Really fascinating church. I love the various body parts offered up for blessings. In a really cool area and you can get one of the string bracelets that will grant your wish if you wear it until it falls off!
