Banteay Chhmar (also known as Narrow Fortress) has been little visited in the past despite in grandeur.  Most of the visitors to the remote and concealed complex have been looters, who have pillaged major amounts of it. Built by Jayavarman VII, this beautiful temple was originally enclosed by a 9 km wall, and covers more than 500,000 square feet.  The reason why he chose this remote and inhospitable location is unknown, although some believe that he commissioned it to honor his son, who died in battle.  The site is considered to have been one of the most important in Cambodia before.  Outside of Angkor, this is one of the few sites to feature towers of carved heads, although many of these towers have collapsed over the centuries.  It was also well known for its other carvings before they were looted.
