Bakong (Rolous Group)
About Bakong (Rolous Group)
This late 9th century temple is a member of the Roluos Group of temples at Angkor. It is the largest and most impressive temple of that group, at 15 meters tall and about 650 meters by 850 meters at the outer wall. Indravarman I built it as his state-temple and it is the first temple-mountain design on such a large scale. As such, it was a trailblazer for temples like Angkor Wat.
Bakong consists of a five-tiered central sandstone pyramid, flanked by eight towers and a number of small sanctuaries. There are stone elephants on the corners of the first three tiers of the central pyramid, 12 stupas on the third tier, and a sanctuary at the top tier. Some of the carvings are in excellent shape. Three walls and a picturesque moat surround the central area, and a nice array of greenery surrounds the outside. Payment Accepted:
