Preah Khan
About Preah Khan
Preah Khan is one of the largest ruins at Angkor, and served both as a temple and as a major Buddhist university. It was dedicated in 1191 and functioned as a site for dozens of festivals each year, with thousands of people required for upkeep. It was built by Jayavarman VII, who used it as a temporary residence while Angkor Thom was being built.
Preah Khan is in good condition, having been the focus of several restoration projects since the 1920s. The temple is allowed to coexist with the jungle, and has fallen and lichen encrusted walls and ceilings to go along with its fine carvings and corridors. The grounds at Preah Khan are huge, although the temple area is enclosed within a smaller 700 meter by 800 meter space. There is an unusual (and unknown function) two story structure at the eastern end of Preah Khan which is the only two story structure at Angkor. Many good condition carvings also remain in the galleries and on the walls at Preah Khan. Although not as popular as Ta Prohm, the galleries and corridors here are fun to explore through.
