Rolous Group
About Rolous Group
The Rolous Group encompasses the monuments of Indravarman I’s 9th century capital of Hariharalaya (which was the Khmer capital for over 70 years). These are some of the earliest large Khmer temples, and represent the beginnings of the sandstone (as opposed to brick) temple structure designs that Angkor would become famous for. They are now known as the Roluos Group due to the nearby modern town of Rolous. The Rolous Group consists of the temples Bakong, Preah Ko, and Lolei, as well as the Indratataka baray.
The 9th century temple of Preah Ko was built by Indravarman I and is one of the first temples at Angkor. It consists of six towers that are decorated with some excellent carved plaster and sandstone reliefs, as well as having Sanscript inscriptions in the doorways. One of the central towers is much bigger than the others. There are many structures in advanced states of ruin littering the ground too. Preah Ko is known for having some of the best examples of plasterwork in the area. Preah Ko is also known as Sacred Bull due to the statues of the bulls in front of the central towers. There are also lions guarding the steps of the temple. Payment Accepted:
