Ta Keo
About Ta Keo
The large pyramidal temple of Ta Keo was never finished and is thus undecorated. It was started by Jayavarman V in the late 10th century and is the first temple to be built completely out of sandstone. The massive sandstone blocks form a structure that rises to nearly 50 meters high at the central tower. It has five towers in total – representing the five peaks of Mount Meru, and giving it its name “Mountain of Golden Peaks”. It would have been particularly impressive had it been completed, but it was stopped early in the decoration phase, resulting in the absence of carvings. There is no consensus as to why construction was stopped, although some mention a lightning strike being perceived as a sign of ill omen during construction.

Jun 23, 2010 For me this temple was one of the many I visisted on a three day tour in Siem Reap. You can climb up its ruins and will have a beautiful view over the area. Inside the monks put up a little shrine. I just love the complete temples of Ankor! Worth the three day pass :)
