Ta Phrom
About Ta Phrom
Ta Prohm is a large Angkorian monastic complex that has been deliberately left partly unrestored, and is considered to be one of the main highlights of the Temples of Angkor. The jungle overruns the site (although this is controlled), giving it an adventurous and outstanding atmosphere with the root-entangled structures and crumbling walls. The atmosphere is partially dampened by the popularity of the site, but it still a key site to visit and provides excellent photo opportunities.
Ta Prohm was built in 1186 as a Buddhist monastery dedicated to Jayavarman VII’s mother and exerted tremendous power at its peak. It is perhaps the finest example of a monastic complex in Cambodia. Today the trees tower over and dominate much of the site, clogging the passageways and blocking out some of the sunlight. Roots add to the atmosphere by wrapping around the structures, and a particularly popular photo opportunity of this can be found at the eastern gopura of the central enclosure. It can be a joy to wander through the ruins and vegetation, although you will not get much privacy anymore. Ta Prohm is also notable for being a filming location for the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Payment Accepted:

Oct 10, 2008 There's something awe-inspiring about wandering around the ruins of a temple built more than 800 years ago. Ancient kapok trees slowly crushing the ruins as they reclaim the jungle adds to the magic of Tha Phrom. A truly magical place not to be missed. May 5, 2010 Walked from outside the boundary of the Temple, through the bush before entering the Temple. That in itself waspretty amazing!! The temple is great, very beautiful, inspiring and just amazing!! Large number of tourists and extremely hot during the day. Take plenty of water and just enjoy the trenquility!! :-) Jun 15, 2010 We spent about 45 minutes there before heading to Ta Phrom, our second destination. The place where the famous Tomb Raider tree is and where Angelina Jolie picked a jasmine flower before falling through the earth. The place is definitely worth visiting for all. The scene of the ruins being swallowed up the jungle are just amazing. Jan 13, 2010 Utterly amazing place were the roots from the ancient trees cover many parts of this temple built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Try to be there in the first ray of light and you will find yourself in another world! A must see for all travellers! May 6, 2009 If you try hard, you'll find a quiet corner where there's no other people but you. Then you'll feel it - how ancient the place is. Like you're so insignificant compared to everything else that have happened in that place.
