The Vancouver Art Gallery was founded in 1931 and moved to its current location in 1983.   It focuses primarily on local British Columbian art and related works by Canadian and international artists.  Of particular note is the collection of works by the modern landscape artist Emily Carr.  The Vancouver Art Gallery has the world's best collection of her works.  There are also some outstanding temporary exhibitions that are displayed in the gallery. Two notable recent exhibitions were the works of Brian Jungen (including aboriginal masks made of Nike shoes) and the Monet to Dali European art exhibition.

While the Vancouver Art Gallery owns an extensive collection of around 10,000 works of art, there is currently only room to display 3% of its permanent collection over the 41,400 square feet of exhibition space.  This has hindered efforts to acquire additional art donations, so it is expected that the Vancouver Art Gallery will relocate to a larger building.  A current proposal has the gallery moving to a nearby site that will have over double the space, but it is expected that this will not occur until 2013.

A couple of other things of note include the 2010 Olympic countdown clock on the front lawn, and the periodic use of the Art Gallery's front steps for protest rallies.

Note:  Admission after 5pm on Tuesdays is by donation.

I've generally only gone to the Vancouver Art Gallery for special exhibitions since I've been more interested in the collections they bring in during that time (such as the Rijksmuseum collection or the Monet to Dali exhibition). Though those exhibitions can be a bit expensive, they are well presented and are an opportunity to see art that would usually require a trip to Europe (or at least New York).
