Halifax Harbour
About Halifax Harbour
Halifax Harbour is one of the largest natural harbours on the Atlantic coast. It is home to the Canadian Navy on the Atlantic side, and is active in commercial shipping. The harbour was used extensively during both WW1 and WW2, and many ships that were sunk by German U-Boats can still be found at the harbours entrance. Pier 21 in Halifax welcomed thousands of immigrants into Canada, similar to Ellis Island in the United States.
Halifax Harbour is most known historically for the Halifax Explosion. In December 1917 the city was devastated by the detonation of the SS Mont-Blanc, a cargo ship fully loaded with wartime explosives. The Mont-Blanc collided in the harbour with the SS-Imo causing an explosion equivalent to 3 kilotons of TNT. Over 2000 people died and 9000 were injured by the blast with the effects being felt and heard as far as 360km from Halifax. It is still considered one of the largest man made accidental explosions. Apr 6, 2010 Halifax Harbour is great place to start exploring Halifax. Take a trip to McNab's or George's island, hike up the hill to the Citadel, take a tour and learn the history of the city on the Harbour Hopper, shop for souveniers, visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, eat on the patio of a great restaurant, check out Theodore the Tug Boat, or just enjoy the people watching. There is something for everyone to enjoy. Every year the harbour-front is home to the Buskar Festival with performers coming from all over the world to show-off their talents. And every few years Halifax is a stopping point for the Tall Ships. It's worth checking out this relatively unheard-of corner of Canada! Oct 29, 2008 I really liked my visit here. The walk along the harbour area is very clean and scenic. It is a great place to spend some time. The people were very friendly and there were lots of good eats and drinks. The museum was interesting as was the nearby brewery (and fun). A great place to spend a weekend. Good journeys! Sep 19, 2008 the harbour front walk is the best place to have some relaxing walks. why not join the whale-watching boat tour or visit pier 21, a place dedicated to the history of canada. there's also the museum of the atlantic ocean, should you encounter a rainy day. Feb 19, 2012 Superb! Friendly & lovely. Canada's Atlantic location par excellence. A must see! Visit the Maritime Museum (Titanic). Eat lobster & take a long walk holding on to a cup of Tim's Double Double. Life is good! Ey?
