When Samuel de Champlain reached the New World in 1604 he anchored in what is now Green Bay. They named the first point of land they saw Cap de la Hève, after the last point of land seen as they sailed from the shores of France. Here, Champlain began the mapping and bold explorations that eventually earned him the title "Father of New France." The chart of Cap de la Hève on the Nova Scotia coast was Champlain’s first survey in North America and the first survey of any port on the North American continent. Samuel de Champlain was so impressed with the LaHave area that he was instrumental in it being chosen by King Louis XIII to be the site of the First Capital of New France.

Today you can find a lighthouse and museum that outlines the history of the French in Lahave.

A truly beautiful place and full of history. Nova Scotia was one of the first points of contact that many European explorers had with North America, and was consequently settled by people from many nations - British, French and German though were by far the most notable. It was really interesting to visit this museum and learn about the impact that this small area of Nova Scotia had for the French in populating North America. It's a beautiful museum, with a lot of artifacts and a stunning location on the edge of the ocean.
