Oct 14, 2008 Resolute Bay is located in the Canadian Arctic. The population is approximately 250. The hamlet is located 8km from the airport, and is situated on the side of a large hill. The buildings are made to last in -60 degrees Celcius! This means that windows are minimal, and buildings occasionally take on interesting bunker-like shapes. On the other side of the hamlet, there is a large crescent-shaped bay. Common sights include huskies, beluga whales, arctic lemmings, and - seasonally - polar bears! Traditional Inuit hunters take their fishing and whaling boats out on the bay in order to hunt for belugas. They mark the whales, shoot them, tie them to their boats, bring them to shore, and haul them up onto the beach in order to skin and distribute the fat and meat. This sustenance is eaten plain raw, raw with soy sauce, or (more rarely) cooked into meals such as soups. Further down the bay, there is a site where Thule Inuit hunters used to live seasonally. They were a nomadic people, who hunted and lived entirely off the land. The structures are made of whale bones, rocks, and skins and stretched tendons of the hunted animals. Another remarkable sight in Resolute is an ice cave that remains year long along a dried up river bank in the hill. Beautiful ice shelf inside, but crab-walking is a must, as are water-repellant jackets, and a light source.Travel costs are high, but the scenery and emotion are well worth it!! Related Links
