Rideau Canal
About Rideau Canal
First opened in 1832, the Rideau Canal is the oldest continuously operating canal system in North America, and runs from Ottawa to Kingston. It is popular in the winter as a skating destination, though it can be a bit crowded.

May 19, 2008 I first came here in the middle of winter February 2001 some time at night. The canal was completely frozen and filled with skaters merrily heading up and down the canal as far as the eye could see. The canal was quite the hub of activity between said skaters traversing the canal and pedistrians (like me) cutting across the canal :) Meanwhile the scent of food stalls selling beaver tails wafted through the air making a cold night feel just that much warmer and more festive. The canal is something you should see during different seasons as its personality varies quite a bit.
