Toronto Island is actually made of several islands located just offshore from the center of Toronto and accessible by ferry.  The islands are home to a small residential community, and together form the largest car-free community in all of North America.  As such, it's a great place to walk and bicycle around (bicycles, qudracycles and canoes are available for rent), and a popular place for picnics.  There is a small pseudo-theme-park on the island with a few rides.  Toronto's downtown airport (the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport) is also located on one of the islands.

Getting there:
There is a ferry departure point on the mainland located at the the foot of Bay Street and Queen's Quay.  It's about a 20 minute ride.

Summertime is when to go. You can have a picnic, relax, enjoy the views of the Toronto skyline. There are some decent beaches for getting a tan, and volleyball and softball is available on the island too. There is also a frisbee (disc) golf course.
Overall a perfect escape from downtown just minutes away for a weekend day trip!

Take the ferry across for the day. If you have kids (3-12 year of age I'd say) there is a nice little amusement park. If you just want to get away and relax on a nice summer of fall day or want a walk this is the place as well.

Cheap ferry ride (under $10) will take you to the Toronto Island, a great place for a picnic and a stroll on a nice day. Long lines for ferries on summer weekends, try to go in the spring, fall, or on a weekday instead.

Great place to go for a leisurely cycle. If you avoid the crowds of centre island, it's like your on a nice island. Take a walk around the residential section and see really quaint and well cared for homes and gardens!

great place to chill out and inline skate or ride a bike. Can get busy at the weekend during high season for picnics etc but once you get out of the central area its a lot quieter!
