Rano Raraku is the volcanic crater where the Moais were quarried. Approaching the crater you see hundreds of little black specks dotted over the mountainside. On reaching them you realize they are moais in various stages of completion, standing 20' tall and more! One of them which was never completed is over 60 feet long. The moais were roughly carved out of the mountainside then rolled down the hill for more detailed carving.

The rock statues - Moai are found throughout the entire island. There are hundreds of them! The most famous groupings of them are on altars, or ahu's. All Moai face inland, away from the ocean, except the ones at Ahu Akivi.

The statues are said to be carved for chiefs, they are displayed on Ahu, which are like altars, There are many that were never transported to the Ahu on the slope of Rano na Raku on the south side of the island.
