Built in the 10th century, Beihai Park was once part of the Forbidden City.  Beihai, which means "North Sea" was built up over five dynasties - the Liao, the Jin, Yuan, Ming, and finally Qing, each adding their influences over the years.

The park is divided into four scenic areas: Qionghua Islet, Circular City, eastern bank and northern bank that flank Beihai lake.

Notable attractions within Beihai Park are:

  • Bai Ta (White Dagoba) - a 40m white stupa
  • Five-Dragon Pavilion which was built during the Ming Dynasty
  • Nine-Dragon Wall - built in 1756
  • Jingxin Room (Quiet Heart Room)
  • Tuancheng (Circular wall)

Getting there:
Located in the Xicheng district northwest of the Forbidden City in Beijing.

Along multiple bus routes.

A great park for a nice long stroll. Or a little boat ride. Beautiful gardens and lots of little places tucked away. Live music by street performers make you feel almost like your back in the Ming dynasty. Cheap places to eat around the lake but also one very expensive restaurant on the island in the lake. Very close to the Forbidden city. 10 RMB entry fee. Could be better lit at night.

Il parco Beihai è un posto in cui passerei tutte le domeniche se abitassi a Pechino...pieno di gente che balla, canta, gioca...è in posti come questi che emerge il lato più bello degli abitanti di Pechino!!! Ire, torniamociiiiiii!!!!! :-)

I really enjoyed escaping to Beihai Park after several days in the smoggy hubbub of Beijing. The park is so green and alive and peaceful, truly the antithesis of the concrete jungle city.

The view from the pagoda at the top is well worth the climb. From here you get a 360 degree view of Beijing and can truly appreciate how massive the Forbidden City really is.

Enchanting place - if not so many people ;). Water, stones, temples, dragons everywhere. And I like the idea of people exercising in parks for free.
